What the Path to Employment for Young Adults with Disability Looks Like
The journey to employment for people with disability isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every young person has different strengths, interests, and goals. This is the reason why finding the right pathway matters.
Options for Getting Work-Ready
Young adults who live with disability can access several supports to help them prepare for work:
- Training programs that build job skills in real work environments
- Work experience opportunities that provide hands-on learning
- NDIS supports such as Youth Employment Services, Capacity Building, and Finding and Keeping a Job funding
The key is finding support that matches your young adult’s needs and helps them build confidence along the way.
How Rise Supports Young Adults and Their Families Get Ready for Employment
Rise Training offers a clear pathway from learning job skills to securing meaningful work. Here’s how it works.
Step 1: Initial Consultation
Your journey starts with a conversation. We’ll meet with you and your young adult to:
- Learn about their interests, strengths, and career goals
- Understand what support they need
- Explain how Rise Training works
- Answer your questions about NDIS funding and eligibility
This is a relaxed, supportive discussion designed to help you feel confident about the next steps. If you’re unsure about NDIS funding or are still applying for support, we can help guide you through the process.
Step 2: Academy: Learn Transferable Skills
When your child joins Rise, they start in the Academy. This is where they build the foundation for their career through comprehensive training designed for people with disability.
What happens in the Academy:
- Group sessions where participants learn together and build connections
- Personalised coaching tailored to individual learning styles and goals
- Hands-on experience in a real work environment at our Rise Albury hub
- 20 employment capabilities covering essential job skills like communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving
The Academy is funded through NDIS support categories such as Youth Employment Services, Finding and Keeping a Job, Capacity Building Supports, or Core Supports. We’ll work with you to access the right funding for the young person in your care.
Step 3: Pathways: Paid Work Experience
Once your young adult has built their skills in the Academy, they can move into a paid traineeship at Rise Pathways. This is where learning turns into earning.
What happens in Pathways:
- Paid employment at award wage on a 12-month fixed-term contract
- Real business tasks working on contracts for paying customers
- Practical experience in either digital services or hospitality
- Ongoing professional development through regular one-to-one meetings with managers
Under Pathways, the digital service roles may include document preparation, scanning, quality control, and office administration. We also offer hospitality roles that may include front-of-house duties, stock management, packing orders, and customer service.
This hands-on experience builds confidence and prepares young adults for their next career step.
NDIS funding is no longer needed at this stage. Your young adult is employed by Rise and continues building their resume with valuable work experience.
Step 4: Connect: Transition to Open Employment
When your young adult completes their traineeship, Rise Connect supports them to find a mainstream job that matches their skills and goals.
What happens in Connect:
- Job matching with employers in our network who value diversity and inclusion
- Resume and interview support to help your young adult present their best self
- Employer education about your young adult’s support plan and strengths
- Regular check-ins with both your young adult and their new employer to ensure success
- Ongoing support as they settle into their new role
As job readiness training providers, we’re committed to helping young adults not just find work, but thrive in it. Our transition to work support for NDIS participants continues even after they start their new job.
